Gratitude Across the Map: Celebrating What Makes Our Communities Shine

As Thanksgiving approaches, the RoleCall team is taking a moment to reflect on the many things we're grateful for—not just as a team but as individuals scattered across diverse communities. Being a remote team, we each bring unique perspectives from our corners of the country. We're all passionate about connecting talent with opportunities in thriving places, and we believe that appreciation starts right at home.

And here’s what each of us is thankful for in our communities:

Tim – Iowa City, Iowa

“Iowa City is special, and I’m thankful to be here for so many reasons. For me, it boils down to living in a place that embraces big ideas. Iowa Citians are fast to support unique things like a downtown block party, women’s college basketball, and a new talent attraction agency. Also, it just feels good here, and that’s almost impossible to quantify until you feel it yourself.”

Monica – Cleveland, Ohio

“I’m thankful for my neighbors. The ones that give my kids a bag full of Hershey Kisses and quarters for Halloween. The ones that give me their baking soda in the middle of baking my daughter’s birthday cake. The ones that walk with me to neighborhood meetings and talk about what the neighborhood was like 30 years ago. They’re the real ones.”

Kate – North Liberty, Iowa

“I’m thankful to live in a place that’s welcoming for everyone. Where you can have a block party in the middle of a cul-de-sac on a Wednesday night and invite the new neighbors over to share all the best hidden spots. A great park system that only continues to improve, with ample hiking opportunities, an awesome library, and cool new events to try throughout the year.”

Alyssa – Fargo, North Dakota

“I am thankful to live in a place where people are so passionate about making this a welcoming community that is full of energy. I'm thankful for the people who turn a parking lot into a magical holiday market for the whole community to enjoy.”

Britt – Cedar Rapids, Iowa

“I appreciate the privileges of a city like a variety of things to do, local restaurants, boutique shopping, etc., but that also holds a smaller town community feel that everyone knows each other. I love being welcomed with smiles, kindness and care for making this place our best, and talking with others with whom you can make an instant connection and friend.”

Derek – Gallatin, Tennessee

“Gallatin is a town rich in history, scenic beauty, and brimming with a sense of community pride. It’s the perfect mix—big enough to always have something to do, but small enough to feel the warmth that only comes in small-town America. It’s where my wife and I bought our first home, where our daughter took her first steps, and where we’ve made lifelong friends.

From exploring amazing parks, enjoying live music and pizza at places like Prince Street Pizza, to attending festivals on the historic Gallatin Square, this town fills our hearts with joy. Gallatin isn’t just where we live—it’s where we’re proud to call home.”

Steph – Cedar Rapids, Iowa

“Living here makes it easy to balance work and life–I have a huge park with great walking trails next door, plus a nearby State Park for a change of scenery. And when I’m in the mood for something more lively, there are two awesome entertainment districts just a quick 10-minute drive away. Whether it’s indulging in retail therapy, grabbing a coffee to cowork with a friend, or enjoying a nice dinner with the family, there’s always something fun and fulfilling to do.”

Ian – Portland, Maine

“I appreciate Portland for being a city of variety - I have been able to keep doing the things I love while at the same time, exploring and comfortably expanding my interests. You can find it all here from the ocean and the beautiful coastal beaches, excellent community events, craft brewing everywhere you turn, and some of the best food you will find in the entire country.”

Rose – Iowa City, Iowa

“Iowa City is full of surprises. Whether you’ve planted your roots here, are here for school, or just stopping by to visit friends and family there is always something going on. From basketball games to downtown markets to plays, there are an endless amount of activities that will leave you feeling embedded in the community. I’m so grateful to live in a community that truly takes pride in what we have to offer.”

We hope our gratitude resonates with you and encourages a bit of appreciation for your own community. Whether it’s the local coffee shop where everyone knows your name, your favorite scenic trail that offers peace after a long day, or even the energetic startup scene down the road, there’s so much to love about where we each call home. This Thanksgiving, let's celebrate the special places that give us purpose, connection, and joy.

From all of us at RoleCall, we wish you a happy Thanksgiving
filled with much gratitude!
